Jacob Scheier is a Toronto born poet, essayist, and journalist, He was the winner of the 2008 Governor General’s Award for poetry (More to Keep us Warm, ECW Press) and co-winner of a 2009 New York Independent Media Alliance award for best feature article, “The Anti-Bloomberg: Can I Get an Amen?.” Co-written with John Tarleton. His poems have been nominated for a National Magazine Award, longlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize, and have appeared in magazines across North America, including, The Walrus, Rattle, Descant, and Geist–as well as published in anthologies in Canada and in the UK. His poems have also been aired on CBC radio, and inspired a contemporary dance performance at the En Wave Theatre in Toronto.
His most recent book is the poetry collection Is This Scary? (ECW Press, 2021)–which has been praised by The Toronto Star and Rain Taxi Magazine.
Jacob’s personal essays have been published in The Sun Magazine, Brick, and Joyland–among other publications. His articles and op-eds have appeared in The Globe and Mail, NOW Magazine, The Indypendent, and Rabble–among other publications
Jacob’s second full length collection of poems, Letter from Brooklyn was published with ECW Press in Spring 2013 and his non-fiction ebook, “My Never-Ending Acid Trip: Why I Still Hallucinate Years after Taking LSD” was published by The Toronto Star in fall 2013.
Jacob holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from The Ohio State University, and he is an instructor of creative writing. He has also facilitated workshops on writing about disability (including “crip poetry) and writing about grief for numerous institutions, organizations, and communities.
